CATIA V5 – Multi-sections solid

Multi-sections solid  Multi-sections solid can be created by joining two or more section curves along the calculated or user-defined guiding curves. One or more leading curves can be used. The result is a closed volume.

Clicking on the icon Multi-sections solid  starts the function and a window opens in which it is necessary to define the profiles (cross-sections) that we want to connect. Profiles must not be cut off against one another. By clicking on Preview, you can see how the generated solid will look like.

Smooth parameters

In the Smooth parameters menu, you can include the following options:

  • Angular correction – smoothes Multi-sections solid along the reference leading curve. This is necessary when discontinuities appear due to the tangency of the spine curve or the normal to the reference leading curve. Equalization will be made for all discontinuities in which the angular deviation value is less than 0.5 ⁰, which helps generate a feature of higher quality.
  • Deviation – Smoothes deviations from the reference leading curve

If you use both corrections, it is not guaranteed that the spine curves will be retained within the given tolerances.

  • In the Spine tab, it is possible to choose the Spine curve, which is calculated automatically. One should keep in mind the following: It is recommended that the Spine curve should be normal for each plane of the cross-section and that it should be tangentially continuous. Otherwise, unpredictable results can occur.
  • If the plane that is normal on Spine crosses one of the leading curves in two points, it is recommended to take a point that is closer to Spine's fault.


In the Coupling tab, there are several types of connecting types:
  • Ratio –  the curves are linked according to the abscissa curve,
  • Tangency – curves are associated with points of tangential discontinuity. If this number of points is not the same for both curves, they can not be connected using this option,
  • Tangency then curvature –curves are connected in accordance with points of discontinuity with respect to curvature. If it is not the same number of points for both curves, they can not be merged in this way,
  • Vertices – the curves are connected to their tops. If they do not have the same number of peaks, they can not be associated with this option.

In the Guides field it is possible to introduce the leading curves: The used curves must be joined if they consist of multiple curves (Join). It is possible to set the reference elements by clicking on an item that offers the options Replace, Remove and Add. By default, the system calculates the Spine curve, but it is possible to enter one of the leading curves of the Spine curve in the Spine tab.

The Relimitation tab allows you to specify the start and end limit of Multi-sections solid.


It is possible to choose to limit Multi-sections solid only at the initial intersection, endpoint, both intersecting, or none:
  • When both sections of Multi-sections solid are included, it is limited to the given cross-sections,
  • When both or one section is off, Multi-sections solid is created along the Spine curve:
  1. If the Spine curve is defined by the user, the Multi-sections solid is limited to the extremes of the Spine curve,
  2. If Spine curves are calculated automatically, and no leading curves are set, Multi-sections solid is limited to the start and end sections,
  3. If the Spine curve is calculated automatically, and the leading curves are set, the Multi-sections solid is limited to the leading curvature extremes.

If Multi-selections solid is copied and inserted into another instance (copy/paste), Sketches are not duplicated. This is a multi-section solid feature. For Pad, Shaft and many other elements, Sketch is duplicated when the element is duplicated.
